Panayampala St.Mary’s Orthodox Church (also known as Panayampalapally and Vadakkepally) is a parish belongs to the Niranam diocese of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. The church was established in 1925 in The Holy Name of Mary and is located in the midst of Panayampala Panchayath of Karukachal, nearer to Kottayam – Kozhencherry highway of Kottayam district. His Holiness Thoma Mar Divanasious Metropolitan entitled the church as the Northern boundary of Niranam Diocese.
Back in the early days, our ancestors had to travel to Manarcad St.Mary’s Church to cater their spiritual needs. Later they depend on Mar Aprem Church Thottackad, Vengalassery Palli Mallapally, St.Peter’s and St.Pauls Pathicadu and St.Stephens Panayampala for their prayers and Holy Mass. Because of the distance and transportation difficulties at the time, it was decided to construct a new church at Panayampala.
In the early years, there were only about 12 families in the parish. As the parish continued to grow in number, it became clear that a new church was needed to suit its growth and eminence. A decision was made to build a new church with Parish Hall at the ground floor and Church at the first floor. The foundation stone of the new Church was blessed and laid by His Grace Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews I on 1988 August 14.
With the sincere and strenuous effort of 118 parish families, the construction of the church got completed by 1991. The present church was consecrated by His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews II, assisted by Bishops Geevarghese Mar Osthathios, Thomas Mar Athanasius, Geevarghese Mar Ivanios and Mathews Mar Severios on 15th and 16th of August, 1991.
